One dead after tragic Scugog house fire

A tragic basement fire in a house north of Greenbank in Scugog Townships has left one person dead and another in hospital with smoke inhalation.

Firefighters responded to the blaze on Hwy 7/12 north of Port Perry Sunday night and after putting out the fire discovered the body of one occupant of the home.

Scugog Fire Chief Mark Berney said there were two residents inside at the time of the fire. “Late Sunday evening firefighters extinguished a basement fire and sadly recovered one occupant. On behalf of Scugog Fire I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and those impacted by this tragic event. “

Berney thanked his team, along with firefighters from Brock Township and Uxbridge, for getting the fire under control quickly.

The Ontario Fire Marshall’s office and Durham Police are investigating.

This is the second fatality in Scugog in the past two weeks week after A 47 year-old woman died and two others were injured after a head-on crash on Island Road in the early hours of May 13.
