Teachers and education workers that are represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO), have announced that they will be participating in a province-wide full withdrawal of services on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, for one day.

This will take place unless progress is made at the central bargaining table.

“After thoughtful consideration, we have determined that student safety cannot be ensured during an OSSTF strike. As such, on Dec. 4, 2019, all secondary schools—grades 9 to 12—will be closed to students, unless progress is made in negotiations. Night School will also be cancelled on Dec. 4, as well as any secondary programs that students participate in off school property, including Dual Credit, Co-op placements and Fresh Start. You do not need to call in your teen’s absence,” read a statement issued by the Peel District School Board.

Secondary schools will reopen on Thursday, December 5, 2019.

Elementary schools will not be affected by this one-day strike and will remain open to students.

Both child care programs in elementary schools and evening permits will continue as usual in secondary schools.

“We appreciate that job action is frustrating for families, students and staff. At this time, no other job action has been announced by OSSTF or the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario. We will continue to monitor the labour situation and will provide updates to you as they become available,” the statement added.

The Peel District School Board reminds the public that it is important to stay connected and look for updates.

“We all want our schools and worksites to continue to be places that value the efforts of all who contribute to student success and well-being, so we remain hopeful that an agreement may be reached in the coming days. As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding,” concluded the statement.
