Caledon East residents will have one last opportunity to walk the halls of a school that has served the community for more than five decades before it is replaced with a modern facility designed for a growing population.

The Peel District School Board is inviting families, former students, staff, and community members to visit Caledon East Public School on Friday, June 26, for a final walk-through before the building is permanently closed.

Visitors will be able to explore classrooms, the gymnasium and the library during the afternoon event, offering a last chance to revisit the space before its demolition next year.

The original school, built in 1971 and expanded in 1998, was designed for a much smaller community and originally accommodated just over 250 students. Today, it serves more than 300 students, as rapid residential growth in Caledon East has stretched the school beyond its intended capacity.

To address that growth, the Ontario government has provided $32.4 million in capital funding for a replacement school that will significantly increase capacity to about 650 students.

The new facility is designed to include modern learning spaces as well as a dedicated child care centre with 73 licensed spaces for infants, toddlers and preschool-aged children. It will also feature multiple kindergarten classrooms to support early learning.

Construction on the replacement school is expected to be completed by June 2026, with the new building scheduled to open in time for the 2026–2027 school year.

Once the new school is operational, the existing building will be demolished in July and August of 2026.

While the new facility is not yet open to the public, the current school’s final open house offers a chance for the community to reflect on decades of shared memories inside its classrooms and hallways.

The walk-through event will run from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on June 26.
