Toronto officer shot during midtown investigation, police say

Three protesters who allegedly injured officers at an event held by a Jewish advocacy group in Toronto have been charged, including a man from Brampton.

The Toronto Police Service says officers were called to attend a demonstration in the Yonge Street and Front Street East area around 6 p.m.

Police say a group of protesters were demonstrating at an event held at Meridian Hall, and that the protesters “attempted to gain entry into the event.”

The UJA Federation of Greater Toronto was holding the kick-off of its annual campaign at Meridian Hall on Tuesday evening, according to the venue’s website.

Police say that when officers tried to remove the protesters that a woman “became combative and assaulted an officer.” The woman was arrested and charged with multiple offences.

That’s when police say several protesters then marched on a Toronto police station at Parliament Street and Front Street East, and the demonstrators were again “combative” with a suspect assaulting an officer.

Another protester allegedly threw a water bottle at officers, striking a Toronto police member in the face.

Kerry Gauer, 45, Laura Favacho, 27, both of Toronto, and Adham Diabas, 25, of Brampton have all been charged with one count each of assault peace officer. Diabas has also been charged with one count of assault with a weapon.

The accused are all scheduled to make court appearances in Toronto in October.
