One person is in custody and police are investigating after an OPP officer died “in the line of duty” on Tuesday afternoon.

The OPP says the incident happened around 12:30 p.m. while officers were conducting an investigation at Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6 near the town of Hearst, approximately 260 kilometres west of Timmins.

Police haven’t said what prompted the investigation, but say one officer “was seriously injured” and has been pronounced dead.

The officer has been identified as Provincial Const. Tarun Bali, who had over two years experience on the force, the OPP says. He was assigned to the Dufferin Detachment and was on deployment with the James Bay Detachment, police say.

“The OPP is supporting the member’s family as they navigate this profound loss,” police said in a release on Tuesday. “We extend our sincere condolences to all those affected by this tragic event and recognize its significant impact on loved ones, colleagues and the broader policing community.”

Police say one person was taken into custody.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique announced Bali’s death on social media and said “his courage and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was “deeply saddened” to hear of Bali’s death.

“On behalf of the people of Ontario, I extend my sincere condolences to his family, loved ones and OPP colleagues. We honour his courage, service and sacrifice,” Ford said in a post on social media.
