While details are scarce at this point, an off-duty Niagara Police officer has been charged after reports of an altercation in Welland on May 20.

When police arrived on the scene, only the officer needed hospitalization while others at the scene were not injured. The officer was treated and released.

Today (May 29), Constable Grant Yantha was charged with two counts of assault.

Yantha, who’s been with the force for on year, was released from custody and is scheduled to face trial on August 25 at the courthouse in St. Catharines.

Traditionally in case like this, the investigation is turned over to another force, such as the Hamilton Police or the OPP.

In accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario, Yantha has been suspended with pay.
