Dr. Karim Ali, Niagara Health’s Head of Infectious Diseases, said yesterday that of the 13 COVID-19 patients currently in regional hospitals, 12 are unvaccinated.

He added, “We have four patients in our ICU. None of the patients in ICU are vaccinated, unfortunately.”

Reiterating what he has been saying for the last couple of months, especially since the Delta variant hit the region, “The burden of severe disease in (the) unvaccinated is disproportionately high.”

With the severity of the Delta variant now clear – 100 per cent of all cases in Niagara are believed to be the variant, Ali added, “This is just starting. There is still time. Please go ahead and get vaccinated. If you have questions or concerns please reach out.”
