Oakville MP Anita Anand is being celebrated for her work in Canada and around the world.

The United Nations Association in Canada (UNACanada) announced Thursday the Canadian Minister of Defence is the recipient of its 2022 Global Citizen Award.

“I’m honoured to receive the Global Citizen Award from (UNACanada), an organization that educates Canadians on the work of the United Nations and global issues,” Anand said on Twitter. “I believe deeply in the work of the (United Nations) – including the Peace Operations to which our (Canadian Armed Forces) contribute.”

With its mandate to “grow global citizens’, UNACanada says the award recognizes role models who have shown generosity, creativity, leadership and solution-seeking, and applied their talents to the challenges they have identified in their local communities, in the country and in the world.

”A Global Citizen need not be a world traveller or professional diplomat,” UNACanada says on its website. “Each of our Global Citizen laureates has, however, contributed to their community, country and world, understood, and shown through their lives that their actions and decisions can be taken for short-term benefit – or long-term elevation of all.

“As a whole, UNA-Canada’s laureates have shown the courage and determination to lift others.

Past Global Citizens Award honourees include 2021 award winner and entrepreneur Wes Hall, former Governor of the Bank of Canada Mark Carney and Bill Graham, former Honorary Colonel of the Governor General’s Horse Guards
