Oakville Town Hall was lit up in the blue and yellow lights Thursday evening in support of the Ukraine.

The current military invasion of the European country by the Russians has drawn condemnation across the world.

“Our Oakville Council and community strongly condemns the unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine’s people and sovereignty,” Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said in announcing Town Hall was being lit up in the colours of the Ukraine flag.

Canada is home to one of the largest Ukrainian populations outside the country and many local residents still have family in the country.

“We hope that the international community will prevent the further escalation of hostilities against the people of Ukraine and its sovereignty, provide humanitarian assistance and support for refugees,” added Burton.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Ukraine and our town’s Ukrainian community during this deeply troubling time.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the commencement of its military assault on the Ukraine on Wednesday.

Russia had previously invaded and subsequently annexed the Crimean Peninsula from the Ukraine in March of 2014.
