A Milton teen will be part of the team representing Canada at the FIBA U16 Americas Women’s Championship in Mexico next week.

Summer Lee, a shooting guard originally from Milton and currently enrolled at King’s Christian Collegiate in Oakville will be a member of the women’s team.

The women’s tournament is being played in Guanajuato, Mexico, starting on August 23. The eight teams competing have been split into two groups—A and B.

Canada’s first game is against Brazil, then they play Costa Rica on August 24 and Puerto Rico on August 25, before moving on to the quarterfinals on August 27.

The top four teams in the tournament will automatically qualify for the FIBA U17 World Cup in 2022.

Canada has medaled in every edition of the biennial event, dating back to its inception in 2009. This will be Canada’s seventh appearance, and they will be looking to repeat their performance in 2015, when they took gold.

“After a year and a half of Zoom meetings and virtual camps, it’s been an exciting week of training and getting to know each other on and off court,” Head Coach Cheryl Jean-Paul said in a news release. “This group has proven to be quite resilient with how they’ve had to adapt to not having the normal pathway to this tournament, so we are very thankful to be heading to Mexico and very excited to represent Canada at the FIBA U16 Americas Women’s Championship.”

“Now that the team has been selected, our staff is looking forward to an amazing international travel experience, allowing these young athletes to represent their country well as we are confident they will do,” she said. “They are a talented group that will be exciting to watch grow and develop as the tournament unfolds.”
