Fourteen new photo radar cameras put Oakville speeders on notice

Oakville drivers with a heavy foot may want to smile for the camera.
The Town is beefing up its pursuit of speeders with the purchase and installation of 14 new mobile photo radar cameras scheduled for use beginning in mid-2022.
Oakville council voted last week to partially pass the Neighbourhood Traffic Safety Program (NTSP) and included was the purchase of the radar cameras which are to be placed near schools and over 30 Community Safety Zones to help reduce speeding.
Tickets will be issued to the plate holder of the vehicle, regardless of who is driving at the time of the offence. The penalty will be a monetary fine, with no demerit points being deducted.
“The data and science make it very clear that photo radars being built to enforce speeding and to target perpetrators is an excellent idea – this is a simple and effective change that will make Oakville safer,” Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll said in his weekly newsletter.
The original motion by Town staff sought the addition of seven mobile photo radar cameras at a cost of $585,000. The cameras would help generate some $360,000 in revenue.
