Filling the net isn’t the only goal players with the Oakville Rangers have their mind set on these days.

This holiday season, they’re also focused on filling food baskets for local charities.

The local minor hockey organization is launching its annual Gift of Giving Back Food Drive with a goal of collecting over 130,000 pounds of food over the next month.

All the food collected will be distributed to the Kerr Street Mission, The Salvation Army, Food For Life, Halton Women’s Place and ROCK, the Reach Out Centre for Kids.

Between 2020 and 2021, Ontario food banks were visited more than 3,685,000 times. That’s an increase of over 12 per cent from the previous year.

Kids Feeding Kids encourages compassion in young people, and motivates them to embrace community traditions and volunteerism.

“Many in our community are struggling with making ends meet – and the kids growing up in these families are suffering from many societal issues, including poverty, hunger, lack of housing, and illness,” the organization said on its website. “These issues affect all of us.

“So, we want to involve all of our Oakville Ranger families in participating in this amazing food drive.

The organization said the food drive, which collected over 112,000 pounds of food for their partner charities last year, was founded on these four principles:

  • To encourage compassion in our young people for those in need or in crisis.
  • To connect them to the hard-working agencies which support the vulnerable in our communities and also to our larger community institutions.
  • To inspire our kids to lift other kids up through their own work and actions.
  • To motivate them and their families to embrace community traditions of volunteerism.

Players looking to give back within the community can check with their coaches and team managers for all the details and collection bags.

Food drop off is set for Dec. 6 through to Dec. 8 at St. Thomas Aquinas School, located at 124 Dorval Dr.
