When it comes to purchasing electric vehicles, Oakville residents are charged up.

The town tops all Ontario cities when it comes to new battery charged vehicles, according to registration data from Statistics Canada for new zero-emission vehicles (ZEV).

While not near the top ZEV adoption rate in the country, Oakville has four electric vehicles for every 1,000 people who live here.

Not one provincial city is ranked among the top 10 in Canada.

Eight of the top locations are in Quebec, with the other two being in British Columbia, including the Squamish Census Metropolitan Area which had the highest adoption rate in 2021 for ZEVs at 6.9 per 1,000 people.

Rounding out the top five cities with the highest ZEV adoption rate are Campbellton, Que. (6.7), Saint-Hyacinthe, Que. (6.5), Vancouver, B.C. (6.5) and Cowansville, Que. (5.6).

Both B.C. , since 2019, and Quebec, since 2016, have their own ZEV sales targets, while Ontario announced its own targets just this past December (2022) in order to speed up the transition from the internal combustion engine to electric run vehicles.

The ZEV adoption rate for all of Canada comes in at 2.3 per 1,000 people.
