Hamilton Bulldogs overager and Oakville native Nathan Staios has been named a finalist for the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Defenceman of the Year.

Staios is the Eastern Conference representative for the Max Kaminsky Trophy. Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds veteran Ryan O’Rourke has been voted the top defenceman in the Western Conference.

The Defenceman of the Year award is voted on by OHL general managers.

Staios led OHL defencemen in scoring this season with 15 goals and 51 assists for 66 points in 59 games, setting a Bulldogs franchise record.

The 20-year-old finished the season with a plus/minus rating of plus-40 and finished third among OHL defenders with 200 shots on goal while leading Hamilton to a first-place finish overall with a 51-12-3-2 record.

Staios wraps up his regular season career as Hamilton’s second-highest scoring defenceman with 107 points (21-86–107) in 119 games.

O’Rourke, who was named to Canada’s National Junior Team this past December, finished his third OHL season with 10 goals and 36 assists for 46 points in 51 games.

The Soo captain was a second round pick of the Minnesota Wild in 2020.

The winner of the Max Kaminsky Trophy will be determined through an additional round of voting and will be announced some time in May.
