The Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) is moving its distribution centre out of Oakville.

Currently located in the town’s eastside near Mississauga, the OCS uses the centre to manage the province’s online sales of legal cannabis as well as providing wholesale distribution to privately owned licensed stores. A Crown Corporation of Ontario, it holds the legal monopoly to conduct its business.

Guelph will be the new home of the distribution centre likely beginning next month.

The OCS says the move was necessitated over the growth of the industry and that a larger centre and more workers are needed. The Oakville location currently employs about 100 people. The status of the Oakville jobs is not known.

Currently the OCS provides product to 164 licensed stores in Ontario provided by 75 licensed producers of cannabis. The province expects the number of stores in Ontario to eventually reach 500.
