The number of people living with dementia in Oakville, and across Canada continues to rise substantially.

According to stats listed by the Alzheimer Society of Canada, researchers project that by 2030 nearly one million people in Canada will have dementia. That number is expected to climb to over 1.7 million people by 2050.

Every day more than 350 people across the country develop dementia.

When compared to numbers from 2020 (597,000 to 990,600), the number of people living with the illness could increase by a shocking 65 per cent.

Providing care for a person with dementia can be incredibly challenging. People know very little about the condition until it happens to someone in their family.

Support along the way is so helpful and the Oakville Public Library is looking to help by making new Cognitive Care Kits available to those living with dementia in Oakville and their caregivers.

The three kits, which can be borrowed from the library, focus on early, mid, and late-stage care, and are designed to promote cognitive function using games, puzzles, and sensory supports.

“The kits aim to engage people in brain-stimulating activities while fostering social connections,” said the local library.

The Cognitive Care Kits are available beginning Thursday (May 2). To borrow one, visit here.
