Oakville Hydro has been recognized for its effort to help customers reduce their carbon footprint.

The local utilities company received the Environmental Excellence Award for its environmental practices through partnerships and programming at the Electricity Distributors Association (EDA) Awards Gala, Wednesday, in Toronto.

Oakville Hydro constructed the first mobile battery energy storage system, which has the ability to displace traditional fossil fuels generated by providing reactive power when local generation is needed.

The local distribution company also converted almost 2,000 customers to paperless billing; and launched a remote work program, which reduced average employee commute distance and produced a calculated reduction of 74,000 kg of COfrom being emitted into the environment.

“Ontario’s local hydro utilities work hard each day to deliver safe and reliable electricity, along with enhanced and innovative services to customers,” said Teresa Sarkesian, EDA President and CEO.

“EDA members have demonstrated a relentless commitment to their customers and the communities in which they operate over the last year – and their efforts have been exceptional.”

This annual EDA Gala acknowledges an array of key accomplishments, outstanding customer service and environmental programs, and innovations and best practices on the part of the companies that deliver local hydro across Ontario.
