Oakville honours Premier Doug Ford for role in saving Glen Abbey Golf Course

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has received the key to the Town of Oakville, the first time he says he has received such an honour.

Ford received the award along with fellow Conservative MPPs Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark, Stephen Crawford (Oakville) and Effie Triantafilopoulos (Oakville North-Burlington) for their government’s role in preserving Glen Abbey Golf Course by keeping it safe from development.

Oakville Mayor Rob Burton presented the awards.

Later the Premier said it was the first time he had received such an award from a municipality.

After a lengthy battle between developers and ratepayer groups, last year the Ontario government played a role in bringing an end to the dispute when it stepped in and convinced Glen Abbey operators Club Link to drop its plan to turn portions of the golf course into housing.

Ford was also in town to attend a fundraising dinner for Crawford.

Keys to the city or town is a honourary gesture bestowed to dignitaries and is meant to symbolize that the they can “unlocked” the gateway to the town at any time and are free to come and go.
