Oakville Crossing Guard Among Canada’s Favourites

Now a local crossing guard is being honoured for his presence in the community.

Now a local crossing guard is being honoured for his presence in the community.
Darnley Lewis is a local Oakville crossing guard working at St. Mary Catholic School.

Staff, students and parents at the school praise Lewis for his gentle attitude towards students, protecting them from aggressive drivers at a dangerous urban crossing spot.
Lewis is one of three crossing guards from across the country have been chosen as winners of the 2018 Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guard Contest.
The recipients are recognized for their extraordinary contributions to the communities they serve.
The other two winners are Christian Behnke from North Vancouver and Pierce Casey of London.
Parachute, with help from FedEx Express Canada, jointly launched Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guard Contest in 2005. The goal was to acknowledge the efforts of crossing guards who help keep children safe in very stressful conditions.
The 2018 winners were nominated by people in their communities. They believe the winners made safety a priority every day.
Parachute and FedEx Express Canada say they are honoured to recognize these individuals for their efforts.
“At FedEx Express Canada we put safety above all, both in the workplace and in the communities in which we live and work,” says Pina Starnino the VP Operations at FedEx Express Canada.
“Our drivers know the importance of being extra alert around schools and pedestrian crossings since these are the most important stops they make each day.”
To date, Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guard Contest has honoured 39 crossing guards nationwide. They received 676 nominations from 14 communities in seven provinces across Canada for this years contest.
The winners receive a crystal maple leaf award and $500. On top of that, the winner’s school receives $500 provided by FedEx Express Canada.
The winners of this years contest should be receive their reward over the next few weeks.
The contest is part of the Walk This Way, a pedestrian safety program aimed at reducing the number of child injuries by raising driver awareness and making schools zones safer to cross.
“We are proud to recognize the contributions made by these outstanding people who commit to keep their communities safe,” says Steve Podborski the President and CEO of Parachute.
“Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guard Contest allows us to showcase the important work of crossing guards across Canada, and recognize three wonderful crossing guards who are committed to protecting children as they make their way to and from school every day.”
