Only a week after a pastor at an Oakville house of prayer was charged with sexual assault, the megachurch says it has learned of more allegations of sexual misconduct against other members of its clergy.

According to Jennifer Hryniw, a member The Meeting House’s overseers board, the church’s victim advocate has now received 38 ‘allegations, disclosures and concerns’ of sexual misconduct, abuse and harassment against four former pastors .

Three of the pastors have faced criminal charges, including popular pastor Bruxy Cavey who was arrested and charged last week (June 6) with sexual assault by Hamilton police.

“We are deeply sorry for the abuse and harm that has occurred, be it sexual, emotional or spiritual, in our church family,” Hryniw said in a June 7 church service posted on The Meeting House’s Youtube channel. “We are deeply sorry for how many of these stories have been handled in the past.”

Hryniw says the church’s victim advocate is documenting each story and is committed to advocating on their behalf.

“The inquiries are not all unique or separate, but they do represent allegations, disclosures and concerns relating primarily to clergy sexual misconduct, harassment and abuse,” Hryniw said.

“These are not new or recent incidents of harm. They do come as a surprise to the overseers and many in this church family.”
