An Oakville Catholic school board trustee charged with fraud had a scheduled appearance in a Hamilton court on Tuesday.

The attorney representing Nancy Guzzo, who was not in attendance, told the court that they have scheduled a resolution meeting for later this month on Nov. 29.

The legal matter is set to return to court on Dec. 21.

Guzzo is facing 10 counts of fraud under $5,000 and two counts of fraud over $5,000 in connection with an investigation probing her actions while she was an assistant business manager with LIUNA, a North American-wide union with some 500,000 members, including 80,000 in Canada.

Guzzo, elected in 2018 as one of three Oakville trustees at the Halton Catholic District School Board, was charged by police on Jan. 21.

She continues to serve as school board trustee in Oakville.

Halton Catholic District School Board Chair Patrick Murphy said in mid-October that Guzzo’s pending legal matter is “before the courts and…outside the business of the Board.”

He added that, under Ontario’s Education Act, a sitting trustee who’s facing charges is eligible to continue performing their school board duties and would only be removed if they’re convicted.
