Flights delayed at Pearson Airport in Mississauga Feb. 28 2024

Numerous flights into and out of Pearson Airport in Mississauga this afternoon and tonight are delayed as strong winds batter the airport and other parts of Mississauga and the GTA.

While Pearson officials didn’t say the high winds are to blame for the tardy arrivals and departures, they did post a note to social media this afternoon saying they were expecting potentially troublesome wind gusts.

“Temperatures are dropping quickly at Toronto Pearson and will continue to drop below freezing into the evening. We are also seeing strong wind gusts of up to 60 km/h, which are forecast to reach up to 74 km/h later today,” airport officials said in a post to X (formerly Twitter).

One person who commented on that post said they are “noticing a lot of delays from Porter, WJ (WestJet) and AC (Air Canada).”

While various airlines are experiencing delays both into and out of Pearson, the airport’s online flight status site (see partial departures list below) shows most of the affected flights to be Air Canada routes. That’s not unusual, though, as Canada’s flagship carrier operates more flights at the country’s biggest and busiest airport than any other airline.

The majority of delayed flights appear only to be behind schedule by an hour or so, with a few facing longer delays. Flights tonight operated by six airlines en route to Paris, for example, are delayed by nearly three hours, from 8:45 p.m. to 11:15 p.m.

Other destinations impacted by delayed departing flights include Halifax, St. John’s, Ottawa, Kelowna and Edmonton within Canada’s borders and several international destinations in the U.S., Mexico and Europe.

Incoming flights from Montreal, Sudbury, Calgary, the U.S., Philippines, Mexico and Seoul are among those expected to arrive late at Pearson.

As always, Pearson officials urge travellers to check the status of their flight ahead of time.
