A pothole can be more than just an annoyance—it can damage vehicles, create hazards for cyclists and pedestrians, and lead to costly repairs.
The City of Brampton is reminding residents that they can help keep roads safe by reporting potholes and other road defects as soon as they spot them.
Residents can submit repair requests through the City’s 311 app or online through Brampton’s 311 service. Reports are forwarded to the city’s Roads Maintenance and Operations team, which responds to potholes and other road deformities on municipal roads.
However, if a pothole is large enough to pose an immediate danger to drivers or pedestrians, the city is asking residents to report it by calling 311 from within Brampton or 905-874-2000.
Not every road in Brampton falls under the city’s responsibility, and reporting potholes to the correct agency can help speed up repairs.
The City of Brampton says residents should also contact:
- The Region of Peel for potholes on regional roads or at intersections where a city road meets a regional road.
- The Ministry of Transportation for potholes on Highway 410.
- The 407 Contact Centre for issues on Highway 407.
- Property owners or property managers for potholes in private parking lots or on private roads.
Drivers whose vehicles are damaged by potholes may also need to contact the road authority responsible for maintaining the roadway if they wish to inquire about submitting a damage claim.
Potholes typically develop when water seeps into cracks in the pavement and repeated traffic causes the road surface to break apart. While they are most common after winter’s freeze-thaw cycles, they can continue to worsen during the summer as heavy traffic and hot weather place additional stress on damaged pavement.
The city says residents play an important role in identifying potholes before they become larger safety hazards, allowing crews to schedule repairs and keep Brampton’s roads in good condition.
