At first they thought they won a free play, but instead a Brampton couple is celebrating a large lottery win.

Edward and Alison Elliot were checking their ticket for the June 7 Lotto Max draw when they heard the tune that plays when you are a winner.

“Alison handed me the ticket to check and heard the winning tune from the other room,” said Edward. “She asked if we won a free play and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing because I just woke up,”

The couple’s $500,000 prize was part of the Max Millions category of the draw.

Alison and Edward plan to pay off their mortgage and put some of their win aside for retirement. They also plan to do some traveling and renovate the house.

“This couldn’t have come at a better time,” Edward added.

The winning ticket was purchased at Rabba on Kingcross Rd. in Brampton.
