Noisy neighbours? Burlington promises a faster response to complaints
Burlington expects the creation of a Bylaw Compliance Department (BCD) will lead to quicker response times to the common complaints made by residents.
Newly adopted through this year’s budget, the department will see a beefed-up presence on local streets responding to issues like noise complaints, off-leash dogs and other bylaw infractions.
According to the budget document, the BCD will “provide improved response and resolution times due to proactive enforcement and extended hours of service” with a view to being proactive rather than reactive.
Bylaw enforcement is an issue the City of Burlington has been grappling with for a number of years with City officials acknowledging that enforcement hasn’t kept pace with growth and with no clear policy on a number of matters such as Airbnb’s, dog kennels, taxis and coyote incidents.
As well as enforcement, it will also be the role of the BCD to standardize service levels and conduct a comprehensive review of all bylaws that govern the City going forward. The department will be staffed by nine people.
