No repeat for Mississauga’s Andreescu at Indian Wells

Mississauga’s Bianca Andreescu’s fell short Monday in her bid to repeat at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

The defending champion was eliminated in the third round, falling 7-6 (5), 6-3 to Annet Kontaveit of Estonia.

Kontaveit, who advances to the round of 16 with the win, won the last five games of the match to hand Andreescu her first loss in nine matches at the tournament.

The Estonia player has been on a tear of late, having won 15 of her last 16 matches and capturing two titles.

The 21-year-old Andreescu wasn’t the only Canadian to be eliminated Monday at Indian Wells.

Denis Shapovalov, who came into the tournament ranked No. 9, also lost in the third round, falling 7-5, 6-2 to Aslan Karatsev (No. 19) of Russia in men’s play.

The Richmond Hill native and partner Rohan Bopanna, of India, was schedule to face Germany’s Alexander Zverev and Jan-Lennard Struff in doubles later on in the day.
