Body shops and tire sellers around Durham will have to find a way to stockpile their old rubber for a while after the region’s three waste management facilities suspended tire acceptance “until further notice.”
The suspension, the region said, is due to an overstocked supply and will be in place until current site stockpiles are reduced.
The ruling is in effect immediately at regional waste management facilities in Oshawa, Scugog and Brock.

During the suspension, residents and businesses are encouraged to store tires if possible until the suspension is lifted or visit the Resource Productivity & Recovery Authority’s website for other recycling locations at rpra.ca/where-to-recycle.
Durham Region’s participates in the Used Tire program plan under the Waste Diversion Act, with each facility’s Environmental Compliance Approval establishing limits on storage volumes, handling practices, and environmental protections for tires.
The region relies on a network of third-party tire program haulers and processors to remove and recycle tires collected at its facilities. Due to ‘limitations’ of the Used Tires program, tires are being generated faster than these haulers and processors are removing them for processing. The result is an increasing stockpile of tires at the waste management facilities.
