Ontario’s police watchdog agency has cleared Peel Regional Police of any charges after a man suffered a broken ankle during an arrest in Brampton.
The incident started when officers with Peel Regional Police were taking custody of a 42-year-old man at a Brampton residence back on July 29.
But the man insisted police “had the wrong person,” according to the Special Investigations Unit, and became “increasingly frustrated with his arrest.”
Police then decided to transport the man to hospital for assessment, placing him in the rear seat of a police cruiser. That’s when the SIU says the man started to “thrash about in the vehicle,” hitting his head on a plastic partition and rear window.
The SIU says officers removed the man from the vehicle and held him down while he “continued to jerk his body and flail his legs.”
Paramedics arrived on the scene and took the man to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured to his left ankle.
Despite the injury, SIU Director Joseph Martino has said there is “no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence” related to the incident.
The SIU is the independent civilian government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers which may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and the discharge of a firearm at a person.
