Nine schools in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon have declared outbreaks of COVID-19 in a little over a week

Peel Public Health reported 74 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday as nine schools in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon have declared outbreaks of the virus in a little over a week.

Of the new cases, PPH said 40 were in Mississauga, 28 were in Brampton, and six cases were in Caledon.

There have been 119,843 cases of COVID-19 across the Region of Peel according to PPH. Of those cases 118,376 have recovered and 436 are pending.

On Tuesday, Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said the first confirmed case of the new Omicron variant in Peel was a Brampton resident.

The province reported a total of 1,009 new COVID-19 cases across Ontario and eight deaths. PPH said 1,033 people in Peel have died of COIVD-19, and the province said 10,044 have died across Ontario.

On Tuesday, the province held back on lifting capacity limits at night clubs and other venues on for a second time as new modeling from Ontario science advisory table showed the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care could rise to between 250 and 400 in January.

PPH said 1,033 people in Peel have died of COIVD-19, and the province said 10,036.

The Region has a goal to vaccinate 90 per cent of eligible residents against COVID-19.

As of Wednesday, 89.9 per cent of Peel residents over 12 years old have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 86.4 per cent are fully immunized.

Three new COVID-19 outbreaks were reported at Mississauga elementary schools on Monday alone.

According to PPH, there are outbreaks in at least 11 elementary or private schools in Mississauga, one in Brampton, and one in Caledon:

  • San Lorenzo Ruiz Elementary School – Mississauga
  • St. Gerard School – Mississauga
  • Erindale Secondary School – Mississauga
  • St Gregory Elementary School – Mississauga
  • St Martin Secondary School – Mississauga
  • St. James Catholic Global Learning Centre – Mississauga
  • Camilla Rd. Sr. Public School – Mississauga
  • Millcreek Kinder Kampus – Mississauga
  • Kindree Public School – Mississauga
  • St. Joseph Separate School – Mississauga
  • St. Teresa Avila – Mississauga
  • Lester B Pearson Catholic School – Brampton
  • St. John Paul II CES – Caledon

An outbreak in a school is defined as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students, staff or providers with an epidemiological link within a 14-day period where at least one case could have acquired infection in the school.
