Nine per cent wage hike, new Oshawa bus terminal key to new deal for Durham Transit workers

Wage gains and new positions are highlights of a new collective agreement ratified last week by Unifor Local 222 members working at Durham Regional Transit (DRT).
“The committee achieved improvements to transit workers’ work-life balance,” said Len Poirier, Unifor National Secretary-Treasurer. “This contract looks to the future of public transportation in Durham from the perspective of job security and improving the experience for community members.”
The four-year agreement includes a nine per cent wage increase, rapid expansion of the DRT system, and a $1,000 signing bonus. The contract secures a new bus terminal to be built in Oshawa’s north end.
“It’s a win-win collective agreement for workers and the ridership they serve,” said Jeff Gray, Unifor Local 222 president. “Working conditions have improved along with a significant expansion of a system that must grow to meet the needs of our region.”
At Durham Regional Transit, Local 222 represents 465 bus drivers, maintenance workers, clerical workers and specialized services employees.
