For the 11th consecutive year, Niagara Region has won the highest award given in governmental budgeting, the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

Given annually by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA), the award recognizes efforts “to deliver high-quality budget documents that improve transparency and inform residents.”

Accepted by the region’s Financial Management and Planning Division, Todd Harrison, Commissioner of Corporate Services and Treasurer said he was proud of his budget team.

“Our continued success speaks to their dedication to best practices in financial planning, reporting and transparency,” said Harrison. “It is also a testament to the collaboration and good working relationship between our team, staff throughout the organization and Council.”

To receive the budget award, the Regional municipality met nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget communications. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an organization’s budget serves as:

  • A policy document
  • A financial plan
  • An operations guide; and
  • A communications device

Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley said the award “reflects Niagara Region’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting and demonstrates how Regional staff continue to work towards the highest standards in finance and budgeting.”
