More than 98 per cent of Niagara Region’s employees met the February 14 mandatory deadline for full COVID-19 vaccinations.
The region announced that roughly 4,100 employees representing 98.4 per cent of its workforce were fully vaxxed. In what had to be the strictest mandate of any business in the region, staff had until 8:30 am on Valentines Day to show proof or face immediate dismissal with just cause.
In the end, 66 employees defied the mandate and lost their jobs.
Back in September 2021, the region passed the vaccination policy which gave them the right to insist employee disclose their vaccination status but at the same time, giving staff “a reasonable amount of time to comply with the policy.”
It also allowed for “legitimate Human Rights Code exemption to the policy, if applicable.”
In creating the original mandate, Niagara said, “This action ensures Regional workplaces are protected from the effects of COVID-19 and supports the municipality’s main priority of keeping employees and residents safe, and reducing the spread of coronavirus.”
