Niagara Police calling Welland fire ‘suspicious’

After responding to a June 9 fire in an unoccupied single-family dwelling in Welland, along with the Welland Fire Department, Niagara Police are labeling it as “suspicious.”

Both the police and fire responded to a 7:30 pm call yesterday at 358 Thorold Road, the fire fighters got inside through “an insecure door.”  The fire was quickly extinguished with no injuries were reported and an estimated damage of $10,000.

Police are classifying it as an arson investigation and are appealing to members of the public who may have been in the area at the time of the incident.

Residents with CCTV footage that captures Thorold Road between Rice Road and Clare Avenue, and motorists who were in the area with an operational dash-camera, are encouraged to review their footage and contact the lead detective at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009395 with any relevant information.

Members of the public who wish to provide information anonymously can contact Crime Stoppers of Niagara online or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards to persons who contact the program with information which leads to an arrest.
