Details are extremely limited, but a Niagara-on-the-Lake councillor is being investigated by both the Integrity Commissioner and the Niagara Police.

Since the matter is veering towards legal territory, the town is mum about the councillor’s identity, saying only it was “a matter involving a third party’s interaction with a member of Council that warranted investigation.”

There are nine members on Niagara-on-the-Lake’s council, including Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa.

Council became aware of the alleged impropriety on March 20 and immediately instructed Town CAO Marnie Cluckie “to bring the matter to the attention of the Integrity Commissioner and to notify police. Both steps were taken immediately.”

It added, “The work of the Integrity Commissioner and the police are important investigative processes that need to be carried out in a professional and confidential manner. The Town will respect the investigative processes, assisting and supporting any reviews and investigations to the best of its ability.”
