On what would have been her 100th birthday, Betty White will be honoured when Niagara Falls goes white from 7:30 pm to 7:45 pm.

The actress, best known for her work on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Golden Girls, as well as her love of animals, died on December 31, just 17 days short of her 100 birthday.

Tweeted Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati yesterday (January 16), “The Falls will be illuminated in white from 7:30-7:45 PM in memory of Betty White on Monday, January 17th – which would have been her 100th birthday. RIP to one of our #GoldenGirls… sending love from Niagara Falls.”

White was the last actress left from Golden Girls as she was predeceased by castmates Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty. A large number of The Mary Tyler Moore cast were long gone when White finally passed.

To honour the Golden Girls star’s support for animal advocacy, a large number of animal shelters have created the Betty White Challenge looking for contributions to White’s favourite cause.

Lincoln County Humane Society in St. Catharines is just one among countless across North America and worldwide taking up the challenge.

“Happy 100th Birthday, Betty White,” said the group of Facebook. “In addition to her legendary status as an actress, comedian, and producer, Betty White has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to helping animals in need, including dedicated support for local shelters and animal welfare endeavors, fiercely promoting and protecting animal interests in her entertainment projects, and personally adopting many rescued animals.”

“She’s been a voice for those with fins, feathers, and everything in between. Thank you, Betty!” To donate, visit: https://lchs.givecloud.co/
