Niagara Falls director April Mullen sees her latest Hollywood film, a futuristic sci-fi thriller called Simulant, open this weekend at theatres across the country.

It will indeed be a good Friday for Niagara Falls director April Mullen as her latest Hollywood film, a futuristic sci-fi thriller called Simulant, opens this weekend across the country.

Starring Robbie Amell, Jordana Brewster, Simu Liu, and Sam Worthington, Mullen’s action-thriller, filmed in Hamilton, sees a realistically human-looking android in the not-too-distant future trying to save itself against government forces as it ponders whether it’s actually artificial intelligence or human.

As the lead, Amell’s character’s attempt to win over a widow’s heart places it in the path of a government agent trying to stop the rise of machine consciousness.

It is just the latest feather in the cap of director Mullen, who started her career acting as a teenager in the 2000 Tim Meadows comedy, The Ladies Man, based on his long-time Saturday Night Live character.

Since then, Mullen had spent far more time behind the camera  than in front of it, directing a healthy handful of films and landing on her hometown’s Arts and Culture Wall of Fame in 2016.

When she was inducted onto the Wall of Fame, she was credited with being the first director to use an all-female crew for her film, Below Her Mouth, which had its 2016 World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film also netted her the Birk Diamond award, honouring women who have made an impact in the film industry.

At the time of her induction, the city said, “April Mullen is an innovator, maverick filmmaker and true young leader in the entertainment industry. Her spirit and energy for life, love and creating is infectious, always exemplifying her core belief that ‘everything is possible’.”

Showings for her latest movie actually start tonight (April 6) with three separate sittings at the Cineplex Niagara Square Theatres before opening to multiple times throughout the day starting tomorrow. See HERE for showtimes.

Here’s a trailer for her latest thriller.
