Members of Niagara College Knights sports teams – whether at the Niagara-on-the-Lake or Welland campus – have been frozen out of all sports facilities and training areas, such as gyms and weight rooms, until the end of the month at the earliest.

On Twitter, the Knights account said today (January 7), “Hey Knights! Not the announcement we wanted to make, but in accordance with the current government restrictions, our facilities will remain closed until January 26th. We are looking forward to welcoming you back with open arms!”

Athletes were hoping to use facilities if social distancing and safety measure were in place but it is not to be.

The college itself posted earlier this week that new restrictions means everything on campus is completely shut down to all but essential staff, which does not include athletics.

“Among the measures announced by the province today (January 3) is for all non-essential work to be performed remotely wherever possible for the duration of the order, which is expected to be in place until at least January 26, 2022,” the post said.

“Only those Niagara College employees whose work is essential and cannot be performed remotely are to come to campus, including those delivering on-campus programs or services. Employees will receive further information from their manager.”
