When Niagara Centre MP Vance Badawey stopped into Open Arms Mission, a food bank in Welland, yesterday (July 20), he didn’t come empty-handed.

Badawey presented the group a cheque for $12,990 so they could expand their freezer capacity.

To honour the occasion, Badawey cut the ribbon with Marty Misener, Executive Director of Open Arms Mission of Welland and Canada Summer Jobs program participant Amy White.

The MP explained to the group the funding had come through the federal government’s Local Food Infrastructure Fund, which supports community-led projects that strengthen food systems and help to facilitate access to safe and nutritious food for at-risk Canadians.

“Helping local charities meet the needs of their communities by ensuring individuals and families have enough to eat is one of the most vital responsibilities faced by community organizations and the government,” Badawey said.

Open Arms Mission of Welland describes itself as a “Christian organization, called to be faithful stewards of God’s resources to demonstrate value and dignity while assisting those living in economic, social and spiritual poverty.”
