A fight that broke out in Niagara Falls on January 7 saw a local man sent to the hospital and a New York man facing charges.

Niagara Police says they were called to the scene at 2:40 am in the Ferry Street near Temperance Avenue area after calls of a disturbance came in.

When they arrived, they found a 42-year-old man suffering from “a significant laceration” to his upper body that was serious enough that EMS quickly took him to an out-of-town trauma centre for advanced medical care. He is now reported to be in stable condition.

Police said the victim had been pinned by the out-of-town suspect against a sharp edge in a nearby wrought iron fence.

Witnesses on-scene told the police that the suspect took off on foot eastbound toward Stanley Avenue and officers quickly found him 200 meters away from the scene.

Jesse Weichmann, 19, of Bliss, New York has been charged with one count of aggravated assault.

Weichmann was being held for a bail hearing on January 7 via video link to the John Sopinka Courthouse in Hamilton.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead detective by dialing 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009994.
