The early morning explosions in the north end of St. Catharines today (January 12) has seen at least one person seriously injured.

St. Catharines Fire Chief Dave Upper says one person is in hospital with significant burns after the explosion and subsequent fire at Sonix, a hazardous waste facility in the Seaway, Haulage Road and Keefer Road area.

A number of homes and businesses were also evacuated following a fire that triggered a number of explosions at a business in St. Catharines, Ont.

The blaze broke out at around 6:30 a.m. at the 20 Keefer Road business with hazardous materials inside. Fire officials and Niagara Police are asking all residents to steer clear of the area during their clean-up attempts.

St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe also asked residents to give the area a wide berth on his social media. “Folks, PLEASE STAY AWAY from the area. Let our Emergency Services personnel do their work.”

Siscoe told one media outlet he talked to the St. Catharines Fire Department, who he said feel they have the fire under control but that there were concerns about fumes from the hazardous materials.

One nearby resident taped the fire this morning and posted it to Twitter, below. (Warning: Video contains profane language.)
