Some five dozen new public parking spaces will soon be available to commuters using Port Credit GO station in Mississauga’s south end.

In a report to be discussed at next Wednesday’s general committee meeting, City of Mississauga senior staff are recommending the final touches be put on a deal to open up 63 new paid parking spaces in an underground garage next to the busy GO station.

The city’s parking spots are located in a condominium parking garage and will open to the public on April 3, staff said.

“The availability of convenient long-term parking near the Port Credit GO station has always been limited. Due to continued and planned intensification in this area, the City of Mississauga acquired 63 parking spaces in the newly constructed condominium at 28 Ann St.,” adjacent to the GO station, the report reads.

“Adding off-street parking provides a variety of benefits including creating more accessible land use patterns, reducing motor vehicle traffic in the core, reducing congestion and pollution, creating more attractive communities, improving mobility for pedestrians and creating a more pedestrian-friendly, vibrant core for Port Credit.”

The new parking spots will be open 24 hours a day and offer “affordable short-term and long-term parking options,” the city added.

When entering the garage, drivers will proceed through doors that open automatically and then signage will direct them to the designated parking spots.

Staff are recommending parking rates of:

  • $1.50 per hour
  • $6 per day (maximum of 12 hours)
  • $10 flat rate — Monday to Sunday (24-hour maximum)
  • $20 flat rate — Weekend parking (Friday 5 p.m. until Monday 8 a.m.)

Staff added it will cost the city $100,000 to set up three pay-by-licence-plate machines in addition to other costs related to the parking structure.

The paid parking spaces are expected to generate $150,000 in annual revenue for the city.
