A little short term road pain could add up to a quicker timeline when it comes to construction of an Oakville/Burlington underpass.

Oakville Town Council approved a proposal at its Tuesday meeting that could result in the Burloak Drive grade separation being completed sooner.

However, the alternative timeline put forth for the project by contractor ProjectCo would result in an earlier and longer road closure.

Initially, the timeline for construction of the underpass would have seen Burloak Dr. closed for 12 months beginning in mid-2026 and the project completed in mid-2027.

ProjectCo’s new timeline would result in the Burloak underpass being completed by mid-2026, but would require a 14-month road closure of Burloak Dr. from Wyecroft Rd. to Superior Court.

The closure is slated to begin in June of 2024 and continue until August of 2025.

Being done in partnership with the City of Burlington and Metrolinx, the Burloak Dr. grade separation is expected to cost $177 million.

Oakville will be required to pay $16 million of that cost.

Early construction on the project would also result in lane closures between April 2023 and March 2024.

The relocation of tracks and rail signals will also lead to a 10-day road closure on Burloak Dr. starting in March 2024 to April 2024.

Construction will also result in a 10-day closure of the pedestrian pathway in March to April of 2025.

The new timeline must also be approved by Burlington City Council.
