Two public schools in Mississauga — and the larger community — will soon have a new “state-of-the-art” sports field and dome in their own backyard.

On schedule to open in summer 2026, a new artificial turf field and sport dome is to be a shared facility between Camilla Road Senior and Corsair public schools. The schools are located to the immediate south of The Queensway East, north of the QEW and east of Hurontario Street.

The Peel District School Board and Field Recreation Inc., a Toronto-based company that develops, builds and manages multi-sport community facilities, are collaborating on the project.

When up and running, the artificial turf field will be covered by an air-supported dome, or bubble, to allow for year-round use.

According to project leaders at the school board, the two public schools “will have priority access to the artificial turf field and sport dome during the school day for curricular and extra-curricular activities.”

Outside of regular school hours, on evenings and weekends, Field Recreation Inc. has access and will rent out the facility to members of the community.

Field Recreation Inc. developed and manages several similar facilities across the Greater Toronto Area including Applewood Heights and Erindale sports fields in Mississauga and Heart Lake Sports Field in Brampton.

In an effort to alleviate concerns among some area residents that the new facility will potentially flood smaller neighbourhood roads with traffic during evenings and weekends, putting children’s safety at risk, project officials said the plan is to create a main access point/laneway from The Queensway East to the north of — and away from — the residential neighbourhoods.

“Ultimately, this new laneway from The Queensway is expected to significantly redirect traffic away from neighbouring residential streets,” a school board official said in a recent email to LeeAnn Cole, Peel board Mississauga wards 1 and 7 trustee.

The email was shared with City of Mississauga councillors Dipika Damerla and John Kovac, among others.

Responding to an additional concern among residents that the area remain safe for children during peak facility hours, once it opens, the school board official noted “the operator of the new facility will be responsible for its ongoing management, including safety and security.”

Staff will be working on site “while the facility is in use” and the sports field will also be well lit, the official added.

In addition, because the size of the recreational field will be smaller than that found at secondary schools, project officials anticipate “the volume of usage at any one time would not be at the same level as a facility located at a secondary school.”
