Fanciers of fall-off-the-bone brisket and ribs might want to check out a new restaurant that just opened in downtown St. Catharines.

1954, which is subtitled Bourbon and Smoke, opened earlier this month at 259 St. Paul St. S. in the Garden City. It is open six days a week (every day but Sunday) and offers family platters, sandwiches for somewhat lighter appetites during the lunch hours, and signature mac-and-cheese dishes. The restaurant is the brainchild of five food creatives with a combined 68 years in the industry, and takes its name from the birth year of the mother of one of the founders.

All of that sumptuousness can be complemented with a craft cocktail. Some of 1954’s libation creations have handles such as “Spruce Willis” and “1954 Sour.”

Early reviews have been positive, to say the least.

“A perfect combination of elegance and mouth-watering comfort food!” one diner wrote on Google Reviews. “I’m making it my New Year’s resolution to try everything on 1954’s menu!”

Sandwiches range in price from $14 to $24, and 1954’s salads look big enough to feed two people.

The restaurant is open from 4 p.m. till 10 p.m. from Monday to Wednesday, from 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. on Thursday, and 11:30 a.m.-midnight on Friday and Saturday. Takeout orders can be placed at 905-397-3126, and 1954 is available for orders on the DoorDash and SkipTheDishes apps.
