The day many Oakville residents have been looking forward to has finally arrived.

The new Trafalgar Road pedestrian bridge is now open to the public.

Located just north of Oakville Place in the northwest corner of the intersection at Trafalgar Road and Leighland Avenue, the new bridge is part of Phase One of the ongoing construction on the busy road.

Its completion comes after two-and-a-half years of work on the project.

“Many readers and constituents have been asking about this one for some time, but the day is finally here,” Ward 5 Town and Regional Councillor Jeff Knoll said in his recent newsletter.

Work on Phase One of the construction project, which includes the bridge, is scheduled to be completed in the next few weeks.

Halton Region is making improvements on Trafalgar Rod to address future traffic demands and to make it safe for pedestrians and cyclists as well as motorists.

Phase One of the work is being done between Leighland Avenue and north of Hayes Boulevard.

It includes the widening of the road from four to six lanes, new sidewalks, new traffic lights and signals, new off-road bike lanes, new bus stops and shelters, new noise walls, upgraded watermains and stormwater main infrastructure as well as new landcaping.

Phase Two, which is currently under design, will include work between Hays Boulevard and William Halton Parkway.
