Thanks to a new restaurant in downtown St. Catharine, the initials ‘KFC’ has nothing to do with either buckets or colonels and everything to do with Korean Fried Chicken!

Chicken Haus at 12 King Street is billing itself as a “Trendy outpost located in downtown St. Catharines serving up legendary Korean Fried Chicken. Serving up Classics – black bean noodles, pork bone soup, kimchi pancake!”

But while Korean fried chicken is far more spiced than traditional North American styles, the restaurant has specialty meals with half spiced, half regular so that diners can decide which level of heat works better for them.

After its “soft opening” in October and “grand opening” in November, the restaurant is shooting for the full serving, scheduled to get its liquor licence next month.

So far, the reviews are full raves as the restaurant has scored 4.8 out of five stars so far.

“Excellent chicken in both solo and in their sandwich. The gochujang sauce is sweet followed by a lingering heat so be warned,” said one.

“Finally Korean Fried Chicken Done Right. The meat falls right off the Pork Bone Soup. Amazing Service. Nice looking interior. Clean washrooms,” said another.

“This spot definitely hits the Korean Fried Chicken cravings,” gushed a third, mentioning the spicy-less spicy combos. “Love that the chicken is boneless and their seasoned (yangnyeom) chicken is the best in Niagara. Got a Half and Half Seasoned and Classic chicken sandwich delivered and both were 10/10. Will be back soon.”

“A hidden gem!” said another. “Friends of ours recommended this spot & it did not disappoint. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and so juicy on the inside it was practically falling apart. The Nashville chicken sandwich, again, was so crispy and juicy and the coleslaw and sauce inside was amazing. The service here was also incredible, the kitchen & staff went out of their way to ensure we had a great dining experience. Can’t say enough great things.”

And finally, “First time ordering Korean fried chicken and it was so delicious. The person who took the order provided recommendations for which sauce to order based on my spice level tolerance and it was perfect! We got the half/half (original and chicken haus seasoned) as well as 50/50 fries and it was plenty for two people to share. I am looking forward to trying other items from the menu and will definitely return soon!”
