As Mississauga charts a course for its future, a new and modern marina city officials say would fast become a destination spot for both local residents and out-of-towners is among the biggest priorities on the books.
City of Mississauga senior staff say big plans for a new-look Port Credit Harbour should be among eight major priorities on a list to be sent to Ottawa later this week for consideration of federal funding and other support.
In a report coming to city council on Wednesday, City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer Geoff Wright lays out “priority topics” to be endorsed as Mississauga prepares to forward its asks to the feds. The list must be received by April 30 as the federal government embarks on its 2026 pre-budget submission process through which it considers numerous funding/support requests from municipalities across Canada.
In addition to a revamped marina, which city officials have said would rejuvenate the area and provide an economic boost to Mississauga’s waterfront community, other recommended priorities are:
- Development charge reduction “support and clarity” as the city seeks to get more affordable housing built.
- Investment in a new MiWay transit operations, maintenance and storage facility.
- Advancement of all-day, two-way GO train service on the Milton Line.
- Investment in flood-resilient infrastructure.
- Taking actions to get affordable housing built quickly.
- Support a new Municipal Growth Framework.
- Tackle food insecurity on a national scale.
The report concludes that through Ottawa’s pre-budget process, the city “has an opportunity to showcase its top federal priorities for 2026 and to position the city as a ready partner for the implementation of recent federal commitments.
“The recommendations outlined in this report would have a positive impact on funding vital infrastructure, enabling housing supply, supporting climate resilience, addressing food insecurity and helping Mississauga grow.”
Marina plan in the works for years
The $75-million (most-recent estimate) marina plan to overhaul the existing waterfront facility and significantly add to it has been in the works for several years.
In fall 2024, the city submitted a required environmental assessment to the provincial government. The EA has since been in the hands of Ontario’s environment ministry for review and final approval.

Plans for a new Mississauga marina also include a large waterfront park/green space. For more details on that and other components of the undertaking, visit the project website.
City officials said earlier the waterfront overhaul seeks to maximize the location’s advantage as Lake Ontario’s deepest natural harbour in making a new-look Port Credit Harbour a must-visit for Mississauga residents and people from outside the city.
Funding for the marina and surrounding development is one of the key matters still on the table. Mississauga officials said earlier they’re looking to both provincial and federal governments for money to complete the redevelopment plan, dubbed by city staff the 1 Port Street East Proposed Marina Project.
Mississauga operates two other marinas in the city — Lakefront Promenade and Credit Village marinas.
