Plans to breathe new life into an old community centre include the addition of a new library branch in Brampton.

“Projects like this are how we build a brighter, stronger future for all and drive progress and prosperity in Brampton,” Mayor Patrick Brown says of the Howden Recreation Centre revitalization project, which will bring a new library to the Bramalea area.

The city has earmarked some $9.8 million over the next five years for the new rec centre, which will be a 45,000 to 50,000 square-foot facility with a multipurpose gymnasium, fitness and studio space, outdoor courts and play areas, a dedicated daycare centre space and a new Brampton Library branch “providing residents with access to educational resources, programs, and community spaces,” the city says.

The new library will be around 30,000 square feet, the city says.

“Including a new library in the Howden Recreation Centre revitalization project ensures the new facility is a comprehensive community hub for recreation, health and learning for residents in southeast Brampton and beyond,” the city says in a release.

“This project helps address the growing demand for library spaces and will offer modern, accessible facilities for residents.”

In 2023, the Chinguacousy Library was evicted from the Bramalea Civic Center following a council decision to gift the $48 million building and most of the surrounding land to Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) for a new nursing school.

Since the closure, Brampton City Coun. Rod Power said he’s heard first-hand from residents who want “more modern, comprehensive spaces to meet their recreational and educational needs.”

He says the addition of a 30,000 square-foot library branch is “a strategic investment to create a place where residents of all ages can gather, learn and grow together.”

The South Fletcher’s Library has also moved to a new, temporary home located in Shoppers World due to renovation work underway at the Susan Fennell Sportsplex in Brampton.

The Howden Recreation Centre was first built in 1974, and the revitalization project includes the construction of a new facility. The city has not said when it expects the new recreation centre and library branch to open.
