A new eatery is vying to bring a bit of southern Italy to the south end of Mississauga.

Soranno’s, an Italian restaurant created and operated by Tony and Nadia Soranno, opened earlier this month at 341 Lakeshore Rd. E., which is not far from the waterfront.

Tony Soranno grew up in the Apulia region (“Pulgia” in Italian) in the southern peninsula of Italy, where 40 per cent of the nation’s olive oil is produced. Recreating a relaxed, Old World charm was part of the appealing for opening their establishment — with its distinct red awning — in a historic part of Mississauga.

“The location of the restaurant reminds them of the little gems that they find in Tony’s hometown whenever they visit,” a bio on the Soranno’s website reads. “And it’s that same feel that inspired them to create Soranno’s — a little gem in the Port Credit community — with great food, and great company.

“Tony and Nadia are all about family tradition and have fond memories of all the family sitting together at the table for a delicious meal made by Nonna.”

The menu suggests a bit of fast-casual fusion with North American cuisine. Wings are offered as a starter along with bruschetta and homemade meatballs, while the burger offerings include an Italian burger that is topped with mozzarella, pesto and sun-dried tomatoes. A main course of pasta ranges from $17.99 to $20.99.

As a family-run restaurant, Sorannno’s open six days a week and is closed on Monday. Hours of operation are 12 noon to 8 p.m. from Tuesday till Thursday, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 12 noon to 9 p.m. on Sundays.
