A new high school and industrial park is on track for the north end of Oakville.

At a Town planning committee meeting Tuesday night (Sept. 6), councillors approved plans by Sixth Oak Inc. for the development of 23 hectares of land at 103 Burnhamthorpe Rd., located on the northwest corner of Burnhamthorpe Rd. and Sixth Line.

Reviewed by council back on May 2 of this year, the land will include industrial buildings, a secondary school, stormwater management pond and three natural heritage areas associated with the West Morrison Creek.

Funding for the school has already been made available by the province and the opening is targeted for 2025.

Plans for the school include a day care, future administrative building, an area for future portables and a lit sport field and possibly a dome to allow for four season use of the field.

“It’s important that this school is built here,” said Ward 7 councillor Jasvinder Sandhu. “We had a potential situation where we could have had a school at the corner of Neyagawa Blvd. and Dundas St. This was moved at the behest and request of the school board. We need to ensure that shovels are in the ground from the school board’s perspective because I believe they have funding for this already.

We need to make sure that it happens sooner than later, because we need to make sure that the kids that are graduating from elementary school have a place to go and 2025 is already a bit of a wait. We’ll only be waiting longer if we defer this.”

Future access to the site will be from Burnhamthorpe Road West, Sixth Line and the future extension of William Halton Parkway.
